What Is R.O.C.K.?

R.O.C.K. stands for Raising Our Celiac Kids. The first chapter started in 1991. R.O.C.K.'s Charlotte Area chapter is one of over 100 chapters across the United States and was chartered in 2009.

We are continually growing to meet the demand of support for those new to the gluten free lifestyle. Members have one special bond: raising a family that has a child or children that must remain gluten-free.

It is a challenge to live strictly gluten free. Our meetings focus on solutions. We meet monthly to share information about gluten-free products, shopping for food, dining out, diagnosis, and other frustrations and joys that come along with being the parent of a gluten free child.

The children, our "R.O.C.K. Stars," get to have R.O.C.K. parties once a month and focus on the benefits of friendships with others who understand their challenges and victories. R.O.C.K. Charlotte also gets involved in other events from going strawberry picking to doing Celiac Awareness through Health Fairs and events.

Organization Goals:

•Educate & support newly diagnosed families.
•Increase public awareness of Celiac Disease
•Educate the public and medical community about Celiac Disease and Gluten-Free diets
•Provide fun opportunities for children & families with Celiac Disease.
See the upcoming events section for more details on activities & events in the Charlotte area.

A discussion and support group for parents and caregivers of children with autism and autism spectrum disorders, who are, or are considering avoiding gluten, casein and other foods in their children's' diets. The topic of biomedical intervention is also discussed. Speakers and other events scheduled throughout the year.

Dates: Second and Fourth Tuesdays each month

Time: Second Tuesday 10AM-12PM
**Children are allowed at Second Tuesday meetings only see below

Time: Fourth Tuesday 7PM-9PM , NO children allowed at Fourth Tuesday meetings.

For postings about future meetings see
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/Free-Mealers

**
Children allowed at Tuesday meetings only with the following caveats:

* There are a few toys there, but, I encourage parents to bring some of their own.

* The church IS concerned about their new floor and does request that children not bang their cars on it…so please keep that in mind

when bringing your toys.

* The church office is nearby and is fine as long as the children's noise does not interfere with the office. I do provide a small cotton rug

that helps with noise and protects the floor.

* We meet next to the sanctuary and do not have our own room. Children need to be able to stay close by and not run in the sanctuary.

ASD HOPE

4th Tuesday of the month

Time: 6:30 PM

Location:
Camp Hill Giant Community Room, Camp Hill, PA

Contact:
Joy Fasick 732-8400 ext.8120 Email - Asdhope1@yahoo.com Web – www.asdhope.org

Whether you’re just starting the gluten-free, casein-free diet or have been at it a while and feel like you’re stuck in a rut, you may be looking for new ideas about how to make it work for your family. Join us as we discuss some challenges and solutions for successful implementation of the diet.

The group will meet monthly at the Camp Hill Giant for an opportunity to relax, talk with others in similar situations, and learn from each other. Topics will be determined by the needs of those involved, but will likely include food diaries, replacement ingredients, recipe swap, where to find specific foods, eating away from home, GFCF holidays, and more.

An outreach of ASD HOPE, the GFCF Support Group is facilitated by Joy Fasick, a mother who has seen tremendous improvements from her son’s two gluten-free, casein-free years and who also balances additional food allergies/restrictions in the family diet.

Supper/snacks can be purchased in the marketplace; no outside food

(Please note that childcare will NOT be provided for this event.)

The principle aim of this list is to provide a discussion forum for parents of children on the autism spectrum who are avoiding gluten and casein and other substances in their children's diets. We hope that the discussions will include practical information and tips on following a GFCF (etc) diet; scientific research and opinion; the latest developments in understanding GFCF (etc) diet-related health problems; your personal stories and experiences with relation to GFCF (etc) problems; information on what food is GFCF (etc) and what is not; tips on how to eat out of the house; recipes and tips on how to cook and prepare GFCF (etc) food; what vitamins, minerals, herbs and other supplements may be appropriate for a child with autism, how to cope with difficult diet demands, plus support for parents. Appropriate topics for discussion on the list include anything at all related to diet and autism spectrum disorders-including GFCF but also yeast, nitrates/nitrites, dyes, vitamins, minerals, supplements, dealing with teachers, friends, schools, outings, siblings, testing, etc. Membership necessary, easy and free to join.

Celiac Disease

What is celiac disease?

Celiac disease is a genetic disorder affecting children and adults. People with celiac disease are unable to eat foods that contain gluten, which is found in wheat and other grains. In people with celiac disease, gluten sets off an autoimmune reaction that causes the destruction of the villi in the small intestine, causing damage and illness.

What are the symptoms of celiac disease?

Symptoms of celiac disease include diarrhea, weight loss, abdominal pain, chronic fatigue, weakness, malnutrition, and other gastrointestinal problems. In children, the symptoms may include failure to thrive (an inability to grow and put on weight, irritability, and inability to concentrate, diarrhea and bloating. Further, people affected by celiac disease may experience extra intestinal symptoms that involve many systems and organs including bones (osteoporosis, arthritis, and joint pain), blood (anemia and bleeding), reproductive system (infertility and reoccurring abortion), nervous system (chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, dementia), and behavioral changes.

How common is celiac disease?

Nearly one out of every 150 Americans suffer from celiac disease, according to a new study by the University of Maryland Center for Celiac Research in Baltimore. The research indicates that celiac is twice as common as Crohn's disease, ulcer. colitis and cystic fibrosis combined. First degree relatives of celiacs (parents, children, siblings) and those with other autoimmune disorders, such as Type I Diabetes and Rheumatoid Arthritis have a much higher prevalence of celiac disease.

How is celiac diagnosed?

A blood test is now available to screen for the presence of specific antibodies. A biopsy of the intestine (before beginning a gluten free diet) is needed to make a final diagnosis.

What are the long-term effects of celiac disease?

Untreated celiac disease can be life threatening. Celiacs are more likely to be afflicted with problems relating to malabsorption, including osteoporosis, tooth enamel defects, central and peripheral nervous system disease, pancreatic disease, internal hemorrhaging, organ disorders (gall bladder, liver, and spleen), and gynecological disorders. Untreated celiac disease has also been linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, especially intestinal lymphoma.

What is the treatment for celiac disease?

There are no drugs to treat celiac disease and there is no cure. But celiacs can lead normal, healthy lives by following a gluten free diet. This means avoiding all products derived from wheat, rye, barley, oats, and a few other lesser-known grains. * http://celiaccenter.org/Facts.html

At this time the group is not active. However, there are archives from past postings which can be searched. This group is for any parent implementing the GFCFdiet in the UK or Europe. This list is not moderated and unrestricted. It is principally to provide a discussion forum for parents of children on the autistic spectrum who are avoiding gluten and casein in their diet. It is hoped that it will also provide information and support to anyone who is following a GFCF diet either personally or with their children. All related topics are welcome.

R.O.C.K.

R.O.C.K. is a support group for parents, families and friends of children who cannot tolerate gluten in their diet. Families implementing a

gluten free and casein free diet as therapy for their autistic spectrum children are also welcomed. Group meetings help parents deal with

the unique challenges which include:

  • Finding "fun" gluten-free treats for kids

  • Menu ideas for school lunches, quick dinners, and sports snacks

  • Helping the kids to take responsibility for reading labels, cooking and planning/preparing food

  • How to prepare for unexpected birthday parties and food-oriented activities at school, church, and elsewhere

  • Halloween, Easter, and other special days - how do we include our kids safely?

  • Educating day-care providers and teachers - without burdening them

  • Dealing with grandparents, babysitters, and "helpful" friends who offer gluten-containing foods to our kids

  • Ensuring our kids won't cheat, and what to do WHEN they do

  • Sending kids away to camp, friends' houses, and other times when we're not around to help
